According to the UN Human Development Index it is the poorest country in the world, with the worst health and development problems. As it is a land locked country, more than half of the population do not have access to clean water.
Islamic Relief began working in Niger in 2005 with an emergency response to a food crisis caused by drought. Since then we have continued to work in Niger on a number of development projects. Current projects include livelihoods, health, nutrition, water, sanitation and orphans support.
We support therapeutic feeding centres in four district hospitals for severely malnourished children with medical complications. Islamic Relief provides free healthcare for malnourished children their mothers and pregnant and nursing women.
A large number of water related projects such as solar powered water systems, providing water to entire villages have been implemented as well as the digging of wells and the installation of hand pumps across in Tera and Tillaberi districts.
